Energy saving bulbs

Switching energy suppliers to save money is something that people are increasingly becoming aware of, but it seems that many of you out there are still perhaps spending more than you need to on your energy bills.

New research from Ofgem has found that 66 per cent of domestic customers are still currently on expensive standard variable tariffs, although in the first half of 2016 over 3.8 million switches did take place – about a million more than the same time frame last year.

If you do decide to switch from your standard variable rate for the cheapest deal available, which is often a fixed-term tariff, you could save yourself more than £300. As of July 28th this year, the average standard variable rate for the bigger suppliers was £1,066, while the cheapest tariff (a one year fixed rate deal) was £758.

Ofgem senior partner for consumers and competition Rachel Fletcher said: “Great deals are there for the taking. There are very competitive offers and many more supplier to choose from, and that’s why more consumers are switching.”

The energy watchdog is now working alongside suppliers to help those customers who are disengaged to save money, while also working to bring in other changes such as faster switching and smart meters to help transform the market.

Another reason you could be spending more money on your energy bills could be a faulty boiler. If you’re concerned and need boiler repairs in Huddersfield or elsewhere, let Home Services Assistance come and take a look for you.
